Explainer series : How children understand adoption over time

In collaboration with developmental psychology experts, we are currently developing an explainer series examining how children’s understanding of adoption evolves across different developmental stages — from infancy through childhood and into adulthood.

The aim of this series is to provide an accessible, evidence-informed guide for adoptive families and for practitioners working with adopted children and young people.

Making sense of adoption : A contextual guide

Grounded in the Contextual Adoption Framework (CAF), the guide draws on insights from psychology, sociology, children’s rights, history, and lived experience. It is not intended to define adoption as inherently positive or negative, nor to pathologise adoptees or families. Instead, it offers a structured way to make sense of complexity, holding space for difference, contradiction, and change over time.
